Medieval 14th Century Brooch
Worn for centuries, brooches were originally functional items to secure a piece of cloth, or material. Early examples exist from the Bronze age, often formed with natural materials such as flint and thorns. Today, they are regarded as items of decoration and adornment, often made from fine materials and precious stones.
Inscribed with the words, ‘Ave Maria Gracia’ meaning ‘Hail Mary of Grace’ in Lombardic lettering. Mary, the Mother of Jesus, was revered as one of the most significant figures in Christianity throughout the Middle Ages.
